I was busy snapping

shots of fat fuzzy bumble bees

when he whirred and flashed

his crimson head at me

I stood my ground and watched

he buzzed and flitted round

a violet spire while

I zoomed and clicked

we flirted quite a while

as he zipped away

I had to sing and smile,

He put a spell on me.

These little guys (Anna’s Hummingbirds) buzz around my yard all year

but I went to the beach after a big storm

hoping to bring home a pink lipped shell

or a green glass float from Japan

instead I brought home a bright

shinny picture of a humming bird.

As a test to see if anyone reads all the way down to here I will send the first 3 folks who say please a copy of this photo.

  1. Of course I read to the bottom. Please keep doing work like this. I consider it a blessing when I see a hummingbird – let alone get a photograph of one.

    Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful poem and great photo. I’m glad you’re not like me, I would’ve left after spotting a bumble bee.
I’m hoping to add to my poetry with photos, but I never am able to get shots like that. Thanks for sharing, you’re very talented.

    1. Ivy, I like your smiling please. Yes you win a Hummingbird. I have been taking pictures for years. This was a happy accident. Please get out there and start shooting pictures, can’t wait to see what you come up with. Carol

  3. aren’t they just the most precious little bird? Ours arrive every year on May 7th and I make sure to have food out for them. I have tried in vain to get worthwhile pics of them. I love to hear them chatter to each other around the feeders. And, although I’m too late for a pic, do continue to please our eyes and our soul with your pictures and words.

  4. Please, please, please send me a hummingbird picture, even though it was past 11 a.m. when I awakened today. I still love hummingbirds, and always have, and you have taken a beautiful picture.

  5. I love to watch hummingbirds. My sister-in-law keeps two feeders on her front porch. They live just outside of town. (Yale) We have sat on the porch or in the living room and watched as many as 15 to 20 hummingbirds feeding. They are so neat to watch. I enjoy it. They seem to come back every year. Guess she is a good “cook” lol
