I Chose this Woody Guthrie video because of the Classic WPA Dust Bowl photography and
I Thought My Dad Wrote This song
As a little girl in Oklahoma when I went for a walks with my dad he would sing as we strolled along. “Get Along Little Doggy”, “This Land Is Your Land” , and “So Long It’s Been Good to know You” were all in his repertoire. His easy West Texas-Oklahoma dusty drawl sounded at home singing these songs. I assumed he was just making them up as I fallowed along behind him. I didn’t know when I figured out they Belonged to Woody Guthrey but I still can’t listen to them without hearing my Daddy’s voice.
It is probably no accident because my dad and his parents lived through the Oklahoma dust bowl. An Aunt and uncle of my dad’s were true Okies who moved to California in a Model T in the 30″s.
What a wonderful story, Carol; I will always think of this now when I hear a Woody Guthrie song 🙂

My dad sang them, too, but we also listened to Woody Guthrie at home on records. Otherwise, I may have thought Dad wrote them, too!

The place where Woody was born, Okemah, OK, is having a big celebration today in honor of his 100th birthday. His son Arlo will be performing there. Wish I could have gone but having trouble walking right now. It’s only about 60 miles from where we are. (were in Yale for the weekend) I can remember his songs from when we were growing up. Loved them!! That was back when writers wrote songs about “real things” in life. Listen to the words and you can learn a lot of the difficult lifestyle a lot of people had. A great history lesson.

Okemah. I knew it was somewhere smack in the middle of Oklahoma! They certainly are history lessons those songs and photos.
