God Bless The Grass

Where the wild grass grows
the grass is growing everywhere

Malvina Reynolds – Sings the truth (1966)

God bless the grass that grows thru the crack.
They roll the concrete over it to try and keep it back.
The concrete gets tired of what it has to do,
It breaks and it buckles and the grass grows thru,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the truth that fights toward the sun,
They roll the lies over it and think that it is done.
It moves through the ground and reaches for the air,
And after a while it is growing everywhere,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the grass that grows through cement.
It’s green and it’s tender and it’s easily bent.
But after a while it lifts up its head,
For the grass is living and the stone is dead,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the grass that’s gentle and low,
Its roots they are deep and its will is to grow.
And God bless the truth, the friend of the poor,
And the wild grass growing at the poor man’s door,
And God bless the grass.

We’re preparing this song to sing God Bless The Grass Sunday. Just in case you don’t know Melvina Reynolds, she was a Berkeley folk singer and cohort of Pete Seeger(whose wife died this week).Pete Seeger and Melvina Reynolds were members of the  Weavers in the 1960’s. Stay tuned you’ll hear from them tomorrow on Dance Around Friday. 😉

Yes, those are my toes.

  2. The Weavers . . . . loved them when I was a kid. Haven’t even thought about them in a long time though. Is that what you will have for tomorrow? Will be looking forward to it.

  3. Hi Carol,
I love love love this song, and I love Malvina Reynolds. She might have been a friend of Pete Seegers, but Ronnie Gilbert was the female singer in The Weavers, another group I grew up listening to and that I have followed forever. Malvina never officially sang as one of the Weavers. Malvina’s daughter, Nancy Schimmel, is a very fine storyteller in the national storytelling community. Thank you for sharing this powerful song!

    1. You are so right, about Melvina, the husband just brought out the vinyl.
We see Nancy often at story telling events in the Bay Area.
      Thanks.
