THE GIFT OF STILLNESS
Life is so often ordinary, repetitive,
a low hum of sameness,
a blindness behind the eyes.
It take the crack of a golden sunset,
and the scent of numerous for us to
lift our heads out of the clouds of unknowing to
feel the hairs raise on our limbs.
That is when we can stand still,
if we can still stand, in the presence
of that which is only known to
those who have stopped
long enough to
notice.

Margo Rody’s Tuesday Tryouts suggested Photo as Metaphor. I used my own, taken at sunset this last Sunday on the Fall Equinox. I don’t know the dog she just was there and stopped me in my tracks by her beauty and aliveness.
What makes you stop and perk up your ears?

I love the reversal of those words…stand and still and the meaning you of pushed through this entire poem. It’s actually the key that I was trying to get to in mine, the need for stillness.

Oh Hannah it feels so good to have someone “get” what I was going for. I believe Wolf Dog taught me this poem. I will have a look at yours. Stillness is the theme at the change of seasons.

Ooo…”Stillness is the theme at the change of seasons.” I really like this.
There’s so much to be learned from the creatures.
Such a beautiful image, too. ♥

There is a curve a bit down the main road from me that when I round it the view absolutely smacks me in the face – every time! Even if I didn’t believe in God I would have to thank someone for that spectacular beauty.
Those last six lines are great.

“God smacked” comes to mind when I hear of your place. Those last six lines is the message I learned from writing these words.

Carol, we do not stop to listen to nature quite enough. There is so much to learn. Our human arrogance gets in the way. Greatly presented here. Thank you for the “reminder”!

We do get in our own way, trip over our own feet. lack the grace to leap over the dunes at sunset just because it feels good. Thanks for the kind words.

Wonderful poem, Carol. Stillness really IS a gift. Yes, the dog is beautiful, almost looks like a wolf.

I thought she was a wolf when I first saw her.
Thank you.
Aren’t the rest are just as important as the notes in music ?

Oh absolutely! Composer John Cage wrote an entire book called “Silence.” Knowing when Not to make a sound is sometimes as important as making a sound. It is like breathing in and out, right foot left foot, plus and minus. Always about balance 🙂

Good words – a meditation, perhaps, on the occasion of the equinox. The photo captures the feeling well.
