Prickly Pear are a noxious weed in Australia. They were bought here by early settlers and became invasive. Apparently people used to make jam from the fruit but I have no idea how they picked them. Not sure how they got them under control either but now you rarely see them over here.
The Portuguese certainly don’t have any machinery, I am guessing they have thick gloves as the tiny spikes on the pears themselves are lethal!! The jam though is delicious 🙂
Carefully … but they are DELICIOUS!

Did not know that about prickly pears in Australia. I’ve made salsa had the jam. Love them in tacos. Really

They keep people alive in the desert because of their water content. Think refugees crossing crossing the US border.

I agree delicious! I think machetes are involved involved in the harvest. I have made Cactus salsa very carefully.
