Yay, Carol, I love seeing the NorCal images you share! Having lunch with friends is the best! In a June long before the pandemic, I biked a lot on the American River Bike Trail–there were plenty of those caterpillars “running” across the road. How some avoided getting run over by bikes is a mystery, but I believe these were Monarch larvae.

Not monarch I’m sure those are more yellow. I had a friend who grew monarchs. I’ll post photos.
Sounds messy riding over caterpillars.
