Dragonfly
I
Dragonfly,
where was it I saw the dragonfly?
Busy
we both went about our lives in separate ways
unnoticed,
undisturbed each tasting
the fresh air along the creek.
Willow
holds us with her roots and her leaves
to a single place on Earth,
a place untamed.
II
This world is at the end of my block,
down a short path, outside of city time.
My breath slows.
We, dragonfly and I,
notice a tangle of light and berries,
jay calls,
and for a single moment,
we become a constellation
of shooting stars.
III
Dragonfly dances
forward and backward
guiding me to
return home
to wildness.

P.S. Because dragonflies are the only insect that can fly forward and backwards thee are given to people leaving home to ensure they find there way home. May we all find our way home safely each day we dive into the dark time of year.
Love the dragonfly lore and sentiment.

I love this, I’m always very happy when I see the first dragonfly in the spring and melancholy when the seasons change and no longer get to see them buzzing around. I didn’t know dragonflies were symbolic for safely making one’s way home, I like that a lot. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

RS how beautifully you describe the seasons of the dragonflies, thank you. I learned story of the dragonfly from the owner of our local Native American store when I asked what to send along with my daughter when she went off to college. The dragonfly wall hanging worked 🙂

I knew there was a reason I loved Dragonflies… I always admired their resemblance to a helicopter…Now, I know why!…and I love the one you wear on your hat…so pretty
