I had been planing to post my photos of spiders and their webs as scary monsters on this day before Halloween, but Spider Woman’s message of the interconnected web of life seems  to be a more profound story as the world watches while

Web outside my front door.

the super storm Sandy move into the lives of millions of people. Here is a report from a blogger friend in Eastern Canada Crowning Crone writes Waiting for Sandy.

On the West coast we are warm and dry but folks are stuck at the airports because of flights cancellations back East. Fans who went to Detroit to support our The World Series winning Giants can’t get home for the parade. Call it what you may, string theory, the tides or  karma we are all connected by unseen filaments; our actions in one place have consequences somewhere else.

Spider Woman herself! This gal is one of the biggest Papal spiders I have seen. She is currently blessing my friends new patio. She was also the star of the Halloween party Sunday.

Each of us inevitable,
Each of us limitless —
Each of us with his or her
right upon the earth,
Each of us allow’d
the eternal purports
of the earth,
Each of us here
as divinely as any is here.

~ Walt Whitman ~

(Leaves of Grass)

This poem was in my inbox this morning

What are the threads that make you know you are connected the whole of the earth?

  1. Beautiful pictures, Carol. I adore spiders; I just finishing editing a piece of our “Guard Spider,” suitably named Ariadne, who lived by our front porch light a few years ago, for my new book, Trails. We still miss her.

  2. I think the fact that everything going on at UUCB is interconnected in complex ways creates challenges and opportunities that sometimes leave me (and others) “spinning.” Who is Spider Woman, anyway?

    1. Spider woman is Native American and African. She is often found in creation myths. She she is a weaver, a writer, the one who reminds us we are all connected. You can ether be spun around by her or invite her to help you create the world.

  3. 🙂 for pingback. thank you. Spiders have always fascinated me. I think they are the most amazing of creatures and have photographed them and watched over them, always. One of the most magical moments of my life was watching spiders hatch one year. We had been keeping an eye on the pod for weeks and then, one afternoon, out came hundreds of tiny yellow spiders. I’ll never forget it. This year spiders have shown up everywhere I’ve been. Spider is definitely one of my totem animals and she has much to remind me of our interconnectedness.
