I would like to use this Weekly Photo Challenge topic “Friends” as an opportunity to introduce you to NDL who so graciously and humorously post comments on this space about our life as next door neighbors in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
Our houses shared a common driveway, you might way they were very close. So when we moved in when I was 10 he just showed up at our front door and became part of the family. He was almost 5 years older than me, so having him around was like having a big brother. In fact we were both only children. I suspect I became his little sister.
It wasn’t until we were grown that we realized how important having each other next door had been in our lives. I moved to California when I was 21 and lost track of him for a long time. When My parents died he showed up again and was helpful and supportive and probably just as sad as I was. He was there just like family. I am sure there is a quote about family is what what you create it to be. All I know is NDL is part of my family all thanks to a driveway.
Thanks to face book, email and now blogging we have kept in touch over the years and miles. I so appreciate how he is a keeper of memories from my childhood everything from the kinds of cars my dad had to the color of my hair “back then”.
Say Hi NDL
Well, the picture does resemble me. Especiall the larger goat. lol
We had a good childhood, but most of all we both had such good parents. A lot of good memories of those years. Yes, we were both “only children” so I think that made us closer. One of the great memories I have is of your dad. I think he kinda liked me. In later years when I would be going back to Ponca to visit my mother he always seemed to know about when I would arrive. He was always in the garage puttering around and would come out to greet me. Just before we got to the house I would always ask Mary if she thought Lee would be out in the drive waiting on me. It brought a smile to our face. And sure enough he was. I miss that!! But thank goodness we do have our memories and can think about those days.
Do you remember all the Canna’s that my dad used to have planted in the little garden area between the garages? I have some Canna’s in McAlester and here at Yale also. One was blooming when we left McAlester Thursday. I thought I might take a picture of the pretty bloom and send it to you. If it is still there when we get back home I will do that. That’s one of those memories I was talking about.
As far as loosing track, I never did loose track of you because your parents kept me “up-to-date” on you when we would visit. I appreciated that too. And even though this new technology is almost to much for this old guy I am so glad for it because of the e-mails and etc. Now we have gotten back in touch and are able to keep each other up-to-date on our families again. Just so sorry their are so many miles between Oklahoma and California.
Thanks for the blog on me Carol. Still more memories to think about!!

Wow, How sweet! No wonder I am always trying to grow Canna’s but I can’t! sorry bad pun. Get me the pictures of the Canna’s and I’ll post them. I’ve been to Oklahoma more then you have been to California!! Nice story about my dad. I’m sure he liked to have a guy to putter with. Thanks for the memories 🙂
