When I was young

and trying to figure things out

the word on the street was

to be careful not to swallow

watermelon seeds or else

you’d get pregnant,

so for a while I could

be found carefully picking

through every slice as I ate it.

In Oklahoma there was no thought

of not eating watermelon.

We were very catholic that way.

even if I was a good

Baptist girl.

Later I learned it was

boys I had to be selective about and

began to enjoy watermelon again.

Please assume good intention here no denominational judgment is intended here. It just seemed to work with the whimsy of the poem.  Or maybe I’m an equal opportunity critic  😉

Margo Roby’s Tuesday Tryouts suggested a creation story I guess I went with a procreation or maybe pre-creation story.

  1. Its so amazing, our elders tell us such lies quite often. When i was a kid,my elders told me never to swollow the seeds or a watermelon (or whatever seed i am ingesting) plant will grow out of my mouth. Man !! i was so terrified 😦

    1. So sorry you had to endure fear and terror around the dinner table! Fish bones were an other fear factor at my home! As a mom a choking child can be a night mare. I just hope I did a better job of teaching table safety than my mom 🙂

    1. Sure why not! What’s that new movie out about a little boy who comes from the garden? I’m sure many of us have been told we were found in the cabbage patch 😉

  2. What a picture. Now there is one thing to say about it. It’s a toss-up whether I’d want watermelon or icecream. Both are really healthy for us.(????) Good poem. Now I have eaten a few watermelon seeds in my time, and I never got pregnant. Our parents must have been lying to us. lol

    1. Sure is surprising how many of us grew up with those little white fibs! I always love it when a prompt matches what I was already cogitating…sort of. Thanks.
