Tear Drop Trailer at the flower exhibit of the Sanoma County Fair. The theme was Route 66.

The American Dream

The open road the wind your hair

zooming across the country on Rouet 66  in a yellow Nash Rambler

with the turquoise blue Tear Drop trailing along behind you.

I was too young to drive during the hay days of these travel trailers but the idealized dream of the freedom of the open road and stopping where ever you pleased for the night still makes me go AAAAAHHHH!

What Song Would Be Playing on the Radio in your Nash Rambler?

The Husband just put” Maybe Baby” by Buddy Holly on the record player (yes we still have vinyl).

  2. I love the teardrop campers with the kitchen in back. My 4 cylinder car would have trouble pulling it I think. My radio is playing America the Beautiful and This Land is my Land.

    1. Purple mountains majesty yes, you must live that! No wonder you couldn’t pull the trailer on those mountain roads. Oh but the well organized kitchen with the Coleman Stove perfection! Thanks for driving by today.

  3. I remember the first camper your parents bought. It went in the bed of their pick-up. Was small, but I know you had a lot of fun with it. And I am guessing that it DID go down Route 66 while they had it. Gee, that must have been in the mid 1950’s. And later on they bought a larger camper for their pick-up. Good memories, huh!!

    1. Neal I didn’t tell that part of the story in my post because I wanted to let you tell it. Yes we took route 66 all the way to California from Oklahoma in 1952. We just used a giant army tent that year. Hey what would be playing on Radio in your I believe Plymouth Valiant? Oh I know something by the Everly Brothers, right?

      1. Loved the 1950’s music. Yes, the Everly Brothers, Neil Sedaka, Brenda Lee and etc. Still love the music from the 1950’s. That’s the channel I keep on in the car. Have to change it now and then though because gotta keep Mary happy. lol
I think your posts are great because we do still have our memories of the past and I enjoy that. What we had our kids and grand kids will never have because of all the new technology. Just won’t be the same for them!!

  4. It is fun to reminisce . New born rock was amazing. We trained Jessie to love it too. It is not the same tor their generation but the way they stay in touch with friends all over the world was something we could not have imagined. Even typing notes to each other though the air would have seemed to be science fiction in 1958!

  6. I have always loved “the road trip” and the feel of the wind in my hair and not quite knowing where I will end up. Yep, we are crones, we are still women embracing life.

  7. Great photo, Carol – love the turquoise color and vintage shape Joss, you beat me to the punch! I love that song, still have the “45” vinyl. We used to sing it on New Year’s Eve and have everyone play their horns to the “beep beep” part – sounded like a flock of geese!
